March 2012

Janette Garthwaite

Janette’s ‘Spring’ glass dish on sale in RA shop during David Hockney Retrospective.
It’s been a very popular item in the RA shop during this blockbuster exhibition. Each dish is unique yet keeps within a ‘framework’ of colours. Janette varies the colours of the beads, stringers/noodles and some of the stripes but all will include certain glass colours as they are the basis of the design.

Oksana Kondratyeva

Oksana will have a solo exhibition “Concordanza” of glass and paintings at Sacred Space Gallery, Notting Hill, London, on 27 March-15 April 2012. Sacred Space is situated in the specially refitted northern transept of St John’s Notting Hill, Lansdowne Crescent, London W11 2NN

Dr Linda Smith

Linda is taking part in the ‘The Thinking Line’ exhibition in Canterbury at the Sydney Cooper Gallery, St. Peter’s Street, CT1 2BQ. Show is on between 16th March till 5th April

Amanda Simmons : Emerge 2012 finalist

Amanda has been named as one of the finalists in the Emerge 2012 exhibition of kiln formed glass for emerging artists. Congratulations and fingers crossed for the final round of selections. Finalists’ artworks will be installed at Bullseye Gallery in Portland, Oregon from April 4 through June 23, 2012. For more info see Bullseye glass website

Matt Reed : Gecko Window

Matt was commissioned to produce a leaded panel based on a Tokay Gecko for BBC1 Children’s programme ‘Deadly Art’ which was aired last Wednesday (1 Feb 2012). Each episode shows a piece of art being ‘made’ by the two presenters based on a different animal with ‘deadly’ characteristics. To check it out go to the CBBC website

Matt Reed : Royal Society of Chemistry

In late 2011 Matt finally completed the installation of this artwork in the main reception of the Royal Society Of Chemistry offices in Burlington House, Piccadilly, London. Those that listened to his talk at the conference will remember what a long and drawn out process it has been. A project three years in the making…

Sophie D’Souza : QEST Exhibition

Sophie is showing stained glass panels and lightboxes in this year’s QEST exhibition at Fortnum and Mason, London.
Crafting Excellence: An Exhibition of Craft, First Floor Mon 6 February to Sun 29 July
Fortnum & Mason has established a reputation for supporting excellent British craftsmanship, and this fourth exhibition celebrates handmade crafts created by Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust scholars in honour of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Thirty-two QEST scholars present their crafts for sale from 6 February to 29 July 2012, and are also happy to discuss commissions and personalised items. For more info go to their website

Catharine Barcham, Jenny Brown, Christine MacCormick and Hildegard Pax

Phyllis Dunseth : Organising an Olympic glass event

Phyllis is busy putting together an event for the beginning of June tying in with CGS “Glass games” for 2012. It will be for those interested in painted and fused glass, moving structures and photography – all related to the Olympic theme and the public will be invited to take part in some “controlled” activities. It will allow folk the opportunity not only to learn about glass but also to attend an Olympic event! Two other artists Katherine Newman and Jane Edwards work in fused and printed glass, and a photographer will be joining them as well.

The date of the event is the first weekend in June at All Saints’ Community Hall, Station Road, Melbourn, Royston, Hertfordshire, SG8 6DX
Getting there:
Meldreth Railway Station is within walking distance or Royston if you have a car.

Visit to West Kent Churches, including the one with the windows by Marc Chagall…

A group of last year’s graduates from the ‘Fiennale’ show did organise a trip to view glass in various churches in West Kent last month, and here’s an account of the visit put together by Jenny Sharp. Enjoy the read.

One Response to Alumni News

  1. Really brilliant description of the day out – so much to see in Kent and well done all for finding those windows. The Penshurst window is one of Lawrence Lee’s best I think, combining so much that he had learnt from his students about colour and texture and freedom of expression along with the firmness of design gained from his work with Martin Travers.

By the way, there are a couple of good lectures coming up with the BSMGP so join if you havn’t – check out the website anyway.

See you all at Oksana’s PV if not before –

    All the best Caroline
